If you have a missing tooth, you may feel embarrassed to smile around others. The space left from missing teeth is unattractive and ruins your oral health. Dr. Gary Nack in Holland, PA recommends implant-retained devices as the first step to replace missing teeth. Restorative devices, such as crowns, bridges, or dentures, are securely attached to one or more dental implants to provide a strong repair. Unlike tradition devices, implant-retained ones stimulate healthy jawbone. Dr. Nack believes that before you replace missing teeth, you should have implants placed to ensure the longevity and support of your restorative device.

Dental Implant Procedure
For qualified candidates, implants are 95-98 percent successful. At your consultation, Dr. Nack will assess your teeth, gums, and jawbone to determine if you’re a good candidate for this procedure. Ideally, you should have a strong, healthy jawbone. The bone is the foundation for the implant. If necessary, Dr. Nack may recommend bone grafting to establish a firm base for the dental implants.
After deeming you fit for this surgery, Dr. Nack will create a small incision in your gums. He will place one or more dental implants into viable bone. An implant resembles the shape of a small screw and is composed of biocompatible titanium. If you’re missing one tooth, he will place a single implant. For multiple missing teeth, you may require two to four dental implants.
Next he will send you home to recover from surgery. After four to six months, the implants will have fully healed and merged with surrounding oral structures. Dr. Nack will then attach your custom-made restorative device to the implants to repair the appearance of your smile.
Devices Used to Replace Missing Teeth
A dental crown replaces a single missing tooth. Each crown is custom-created to fit the color and shape of your unique smile. Dr. Nack will recommend porcelain, porcelain-fused-to-metal, or a metal crown, depending on the location of the missing tooth. Replacement teeth that are visible when you smile will be made from porcelain. This material is esthetically pleasing and looks like a natural tooth. For back teeth, he will recommend porcelain-fused-to-metal, which has a metal base and a thin layer of porcelain over the top to create a strong, natural looking crown.
For multiple missing teeth, a dental bridge or dentures are used. If you have multiple, adjacent teeth, a bridge is attached to two implant-retained crowns to conceal the gap. Dr. Nack offers partial and full dentures. If you have an entire row of missing teeth, he will place four dental implants and attach the dentures to the posts.
If you already wear dentures, but find yourself irritated with the lengthy maintenance or uncomfortable fit, Dr. Nack can create implant-retained dentures for you. These are more comfortable than traditional dentures because they snap onto implants, rather than sitting against the gums. Many denture patients complain of gum irritation or shifting. However, implant dentures securely attach the implants to eliminate these concerns.
