Orthodontics Can Improve Your Look and Long-Term Dental Health

Orthodontics from our Holland, PA, practice will not simply straighten your teeth and improve the look of your smile. Research shows that crooked teeth are more prone to wear and fracture, and they can increase your risk for developing periodontal disease as well. By straightening your crowded teeth, you can actually avoid the need for more extensive dental treatment in the future! Dr. Gary Nack provides orthodontic services to patients who require minor tooth movement. He can also treat those who suffer from crowded front teeth with an otherwise normal bite. More difficult cases are referred to an orthodontist. In this way, he can ensure ideal treatment protocols and exceptional final results. Dr. Nack offers the following orthodontic services.

Invisalign uses custom-made clear aligners to re-align crooked teeth into an ideal position. Your treatment begins with a consultation to decide if this treatment is appropriate for you. If so, Dr. Nack will take the necessary records and impressions to proceed with your case. From there he will design your treatment using Invisalign’s advanced ClinCheck software. Once fabricated, he will bond the necessary attachments to your teeth and deliver your first sets of trays. Plan to see him about every 6 weeks for evaluation, adjustments and delivery of additional trays. As with traditional braces, the Invisalign timeline varies from patient to patient. However, the average case takes about one year.

For qualified individuals, Invisalign can be an outstanding choice because the aligners are virtually invisible. Working adults and older teens will appreciate the ability to smile freely and speak in public without embarrassment. Plus, Invisalign trays are removable, so there are virtually no dietary restrictions during treatment. Nonetheless, patients must remain compliant and remember to wear the trays 20 to 22 hours a day to ensure a beautiful and functional result.

Fixed Braces

Made with metal (or porcelain) brackets that will affix to the front of your teeth, traditional braces will exert a slight pressure via an archwire running between the brackets. Metal braces will typically remain on your teeth for 18 months to 2 years. In some cases, treatment may be shorter, depending on the original positioning of your teeth. Fixed braces are appropriate for children, teens, and adults. In fact, they are often the optimal choice for younger patients. Because they remain bonded in place, kids and teens cannot forget to wear them or lose their appliances at school. In some cases, the original position of your teeth may also make fixed braces a more effective choice.

Removable Appliances

Once your braces come off, or your Invisalign treatment is done, we will provide a retainer. You should wear this device every day until Dr. Nack says it is no longer necessary. As your dental roots adjust to their new positions, this appliance will keep your teeth from shifting back to where they were before treatment. Occasionally, your dentist may recommend a retainer without braces. Typically, he reserves this option for patients who require very slight orthodontic movements.

The Importance of Orthodontic Treatment

Whatever method you select, orthodontia can have dramatic effects on your appearance and your oral health. Not only will you smile more confidently, but your newly aligned teeth will reduce your incidence of tooth decay, gum disease, tooth wear and fracture.
